Statement from 7 Harrington Street Chambers Criminal Team

The members of the Criminal Team at 7 Harrington Street Chambers, welcome the support of the Chair and Vice Chair of the General Council of the Bar in their recent statement. (http://www.barcouncil.org.uk/media-centre/news-and-press-releases/2018/march/bar-council-we-stand-by-the-criminal-bar-association-the-criminal-bar/)

“…[W] e stand by the Criminal Bar Association and the Criminal Bar in striving for the proper funding of the criminal justice system, as we stand by all others who strive for the proper funding of other parts of our system of justice.

We stand by them, too, in seeking to secure a future for the Criminal Bar, whose dedication and commitment are essential to ensure that we can deliver justice fairly and efficiently.  Legal aid across the board - including criminal legal aid - requires sufficient funding from the Government. There is just no alternative if we want to achieve effective, fair and efficient justice. The current level of funding is just not sufficient.”

These Chambers have a proud history of acting in cases in Liverpool and beyond. We are committed to doing our very best for our clients at every turn. That said, we cannot and will not ignore the crisis in underfunding. Our responsibility to the criminal justice system means that we must act now.

Having carefully considered the various issues arising, individual members of 7 Harrington Street Chambers will not be accepting new cases under legal aid representation orders issued after 1st April 2018.

This remains a personal decision for each individual member. Any further enquiries should be directed to our criminal clerks.
